American Superconductor Corp. (AMSC) says its high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wire is being integrated into a new electrical substation in Baiyin, in the Gansu province of China.
"The Baiyin superconductor substation is one of the most ambitious superconductor projects undertaken to date anywhere in the world," says Dr. Xiao Liye, head of the Institute of Electrical Engineering, China Academy of Science, which built the substation. IEE CAS. "This is a holistic project that demonstrates how superconductors will be applied in substations throughout China in the years ahead."
The Baiyin substation includes various superconductor-based systems, such as a fault-current limiter, power cable system, magnetic energy storage and transformer, AMSC says.
