Brazil-based utility AES Eletropaulo and Silver Spring Networks have deployed a smart grid project in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The project was led by the utility in partnership with Senergy, which is part of the Nansen Group.
The goal of the project is to develop and deploy a unified smart grid platform using wireless technology for metering, supervision and remote control in order to reduce operating costs and non-technical losses, according to Silver Spring Networks.
The project was implemented using Silver Spring Network's smart energy platform and Senergy/Nansen's centralized smart metering technology, which was installed at 1,000 homes in the Morro Doce region of Brazil, which is mountainous and has a dense urban population.
Immediately following the installation, the company began collecting information to assess the project results. This phase is expected to be finalized in six to 12 months, the companies explain, adding that preliminary results reveal a reduction in non-technical losses, lower operating costs and improved customer service.
The communication infrastructure used in the project will, in the future, allow utilities to connect other device,s such as distribution automation equipment.
