BYD Ltd. and Utility Partners of America (UPA) have put into service a renewable-balancing battery system for an investor-owned utility in south Charlotte, N.C.

The 40-foot, self-contained energy-storage station (ESS) has several BYD-vertically integrated components, including a 200 KW bi-directional, UL-compliant BYD inverter with BYD's 500 KWh iron phosphate battery. According to BYD, the ESS can be cycled more than 6,000 times and offers AC-DC-AC efficiency as high as 94%, as well as DC-to-DC efficiency as high as 96%.

“BYD believes that the only way we can make renewable power ‘relevant to the grid’ is through distributed storage with firm ‘dispatchable’ capacity - we are delighted to work with UPA to install this environmentally friendly energy-storage system for one of the largest utility companies in the U.S.,” says Micheal Austin, BYD America vice president.
