Australian energy delivery company
SP AusNet says it is implementing
GE’s WiMAX 4G smart grid solution, complemented by
Motorola and
GridNet technologies, for its new smart metering initiative.
GE is providing the meter communications technology across the network and supplying half of the project's smart meters. GridNet is providing its PolicyNet SmartGrid network management system software suite to manage the meters, controllers, switches and other devices. Motorola is providing the communications infrastructure.
Motorola's WiMAX application supports wireless communications between customers' meters and the central system, enabling the system to record electricity consumption measurements and remotely manage customer meters. The company will supply and deploy WAP 650 base stations operating at 2.3 GHz, an Access Service Network Gateway and new microwave systems to extend the wide area network to new coverage areas.
Grid Net's newly launched (www.grid-net.com) PolicyNet SmartGrid software suite comprises its SmartGrid Network Operating System, PolicyNet SmartGrid Network Management System and PolicyNet SmartDevice Agents. The software gives utilities an end-to-end internetworking platform that enables advanced smart grid services. PolicyNet is currently available bundled with the GE WiMAX SmartMeter and SmartGrid Router family of products, which operate on the IEEE 802.16.e wireless broadband platform.
The project, covering nearly 700,000 smart meters, will begin before the end of the year and run through 2013.
